Who is burning the Spanish forests?
Using multiple sources including sentencing reports, the environmental ministry and Guardia Civil analysis, environmental NGO Greenpeace has shown that 3 out of 4 forest fires are started deliberately by 8 types of people that reflect the different activities and relationship we have with rural areas. The majority were caused by burning off of stubble and regenerating pastures by farmers and while Greenpeace understand the anger of the farmers being accused they feel there needs to be more attention paid to the causes of these fires. Another serious issue is that the lack of prosecution means that only 1% are brought to trial and of those only 20% are sentenced. Full article in Spanish here
