We recently reported on the proposed project to develop a macro-urbanisation in the natural beauty spot of Barranco Blanco near Alhaurin el Grande. Today, as reported in El Pais, the project has been declared ‘non viable’ by the environmental department and formally brings an end to a long campaign to stop the developer, Ondobide SA from building in the area. Having already been refused planning permission for another project this did not deter the developer from presenting an amended, but similar one in July (see Chispa newsletter 74), widely condemned by environmental groups who pointed out that this area has enormous ecological value. The junta’s report recognises these concerns and points out that the project would cause a huge negative visual impact due to the excavation necessary to build on the steep sided hills.
