Minerals: Potassium

 

Potassium, along with calcium, magnesium and salt, is one of the primary electrolytes in the body. It helps maintain the fluid balance in the cells, and works together with sodium (salt) to control our blood pressure. It works together with magnesium to keep one’s heart healthy. A deficiency of both these minerals could increase the risk of suffering arrhythmias, heart failure or strokes. Symptoms of a possible deficiency in potassium, or even magnesium and calcium, can include muscle fatigue, weakness and loss of energy, but the most likely is leg cramps. Good sources include almonds, avocados, broccoli, and apricots, although a range of meats and fish, as well as bananas also provide reasonable quantities of potassium. Supplements can be of just potassium, or combinations with other minerals.
