Quality of Life: Acupuncture

The word Acupuncture means needle (acu) and stick (puncture). According to Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine health is a condition arising from the balance of Yin and Yang within the body. Yin and Yang are complementary opposites within a greater whole.

The black part with the white dot is Yin, representing the feminine, passive principles and symbolises moon, north, cold, shadow, earth and so on. The white part is Yang representing the opposite: the masculine, active principles and symbolises sky, sun, south, dryness and so on. Everything has both Yin and Yang aspects, which are constantly interacting, never existing in absolute stasis.

Particularly important in Acupuncture is the free flow of Qi (pronounce Ch-ee), or vital energy, through 12 channels called meridians. Qi is immaterial and hence Yang, and its Yin, material counterpart is Blood, roughly equivalent to the physiological blood. There are over 600 Acupuncture points situated on meridians in which Qi flows and the application of Acupuncture needles regulates the flow of Qi and Blood, tonifying where there is deficiency, draining where there is excess, and promoting free flow where there is stagnation. An essential axiom of Acupuncture is "no pain, no blockage; no blockage, no pain".

How can a needle in the foot help a headache? Because all organs and cells are connected to each other through the meridians, stimulation by thin and small Acupuncture needles of certain points i.e. the foot can ease the tension and stagnation of energy in the head immediately, without the normal side effects of aspirin or other chemical drugs. With Acupuncture the body gets help to heal and repair itself.

In the field of Acupuncture there are many micro-systems of practice, some very old and some new, such as ear, hand, scalp and facial Acupuncture. One that we use in the clinic almost daily is called Acupuncture 2000 and was created by a Danish colleague. The mechanism is different from the classical meridian Acupuncture as the stimulation by the needle in very specific points in the elbow, knee, finger or toe joints sends messages directly to the brain to increase the blood circulation and healing factors to the sore or injured muscle, joint or organ.

This method can have immediate effects and is very successful in pain management. We have used it very successfully in treating age related Macula Degeneration, where calcifications in the small blood vessels in the back of the eye cause central blurred vision and untreated leads to blindness. With Acupuncture 2000 we can improve and maintain the eyesight of patients with a success rate of 70 %, which is amazing – especially when the eye doctors have no cure for this disorder.

In the clinic we use Acupuncture as an effective complementary tool together with Live Blood Analysis, laboratory tests, nutritional advice and lifestyle counseling to enhance the effect of treating many disorders such as pain, diabetes, obesity, rheumatism, allergies, digestive disorders, tiredness, hormonal imbalances, PMS, eczemas, healing fractures, back pain, frozen shoulders, tennis & golf elbows, hypertension, headaches, stress and migraine – all these treatments are free from side effects and help people lead healthier lives, naturally.
