Slow food manifesto: in support of natural sweetener STEVIA

Currently, this market is dominated by sugar, corn syrup, high fructose and synthetic products suchas saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame and sucralose, some of them with serious doubts about their potential carcinogenic effects.  According to various sources Stevia in its natural form is 15 times sweeter than table sugar and its rich extract stevia and Rebaudioside about 200 times more. Moreover intake does not affect blood sugar levels but regulates them. Recently among the findings of The second meeting of Stevia (Asuncion, Paraguay, 2006) were presented publicly the results of the studies required by the Joint FAO / WHO Expert Comitee on Food Additives (JECFA), in order to achieve the final status of Steviolglucosidos, and start later steps that allow the opening of the international marketing of Stevia in the countries that still today is not authorized.
