A fistful of festivals

With spring firmly in the air, now is the perfect time to start thinking about events, fairs and festivals and this year alternative Andalucía is blessed with a brace of gatherings for everyone to enjoy wherever they are along the coast. From Nerja to Marbella, 2012 is going to be a great year for getting out and about, finding out what is happening in the eco-holistic world of southern Spain, joining in workshops and classes, enjoying concerts, eating healthy food and exploring some great craft markets.

The season kicks off on May 4 with an innovative new festival called Smuack in Maro, the small, pretty village next to Nerja. Aimed at the 18 – 25 year old market, Smuack is launched this year under the heading of “Learn to live an alternative life”, and mixed in with hip-hop, urban grafitti, breakdance and concerts there will be workshops in eco building, personal development and talks on green living, recycling and spiritual growth. www.smuack.eu

The end of May sees a return to the Palacio de Congresos of Natura Málaga, one of southern Spain’s premier eco ferias, putting Málaga firmly on the map for natural and healthy living. A must visit event for anyone wanting to find out about latest developments in natural health, organic food, healthy products and holistic living, Natura Málaga is now in its 4th edition and as well as the dynamic market area, the weekend will be full of activities and workshops, children’s activities and something for all the family. www.naturamalaga.com

Heading back to Nerja in June, ForoAcce celebrates its 3rd year offering a diverse mix of quality workshops in different venues in the town, concerts and a market in the delightful Plaza de Cangrejos. With an emphasis this year on eco living there will be courses on organic farming and vegetarianism, as well as personal development and healthy living. www.foroacce.com

Another new festival with ambitions to be one of the biggest in the region, Ecovivir launches in Ronda on June 15 for 3 days of workshops, activities and a large market located in the main street of the town. An international and multi disciplinary event that promises a packed weekend for all the family. www.feriaecovivir.com

At the end of July, celebrating 10 years of natural living in Andalucía, La Chispa and our partners in San Pedro will be holding Arte Sano IV on the beach for a weekend of music, dance, activities, fun for the kids, classes, workshops, healthy food, a chance to meet new friends and old. www.lachispa.net/artesano

Rounding off the season Etni-Coín will be held in Coín at the end of September, an ethnic music festival with an eco-holistic emphasis.

Andalucía is already full of all kinds of fairs and events and alternative fairs are fast becoming well established on the annual events calendar. They act as reference points for everyone involved in the natural, eco-holistic world, so please show your support and come along and enjoy these great events this year.
