This issue our health detectives continue their detailed step by step guide to healthy living. Last issue they looked at the importance of hydrating, and here they help you make sure you get the right water to hydrate properly.
Fresh spring water is absolutely the best water you can get, but if you don’t have a spring in the back of the garden then you need to figure out how to get the second best. Here on Costa del Sol I don’t recommend drinking the tap water, so that usually means buying plastic bottled water. Apart from the issue of toxins leaching into the water from the plastic, bottled water can be stored for up to two years before being sold, making it practically ‘dead’ water.
The aim is to create mineral-rich, toxin free, alkaline water and there are many ways to achieve this, from simple natural remedies to the Rolls Royce of devices. To get alkaline water you either need to chemically change the water by adding things to it or to increase the hydrogen ions by filtering. Filters like Britta filters or reverse osmosis clean the water of bacteria and heavy metals but do not add any alkalinity to it.
Adding alkaline ingredients to the water
Adding lemon to the water is handy at all times and by squeezing lemon or lime juice into water you immediately give it a healthy kick. Lemon water is very alkaline and helps to detoxify the liver and kidneys.
Adding ½ to 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate to a big glass of water will increase alkalinity a lot. It is also cheap and convenient and available in any supermarket.
Adding pH Drops offer intense alkalinity and only a few are needed for a boost. There are several types around.
Adding alkaline minerals boost the alkalinity even more intensively, and a good alkaline mineral salt with magnesium, calcium, sodium and potassium can be added before bedtime.
In Spain an easy ancient remedy to keep hydrated and alkaline during the hot summers is to squeeze a lemon, add 1 tspn of bicarbonate and 1 tsp of good whole salt to 1 litre of water – this will hydrate the body, cleanse (lemon) and keep up the electrolytes (salts) and the alkaline design (bicarbonate).
Using a Water Ioniser. This is an expensive device but it not only makes the water more alkaline, it also makes it more ‘wet’, so it is easier for the body to ‘digest’. The Ionised Water is also negatively electrically charged so we literally are drinking anti-oxidants. Water is ionised (electrically enhanced) by running it over positive and negative electrodes. This separates the water into alkaline (70%) and acidic (30%). This is very beneficial as the alkaline water is then used for drinking, while the acidic water can be used on the outside of the body and for cleaning as it is proven to kill many types of bacteria.
What Else Can I Drink?
It does not have to be water all day every day, you can add herbal teas, like mint, which is good for digestion, vegetable juices and green drinks. Coconut water is delicious, refreshing and alkaline. Try to stay away from fizzy water, as the carbonation process makes the water have a pH of about 5.
Start hydrating – and make it a habit
In the beginning drinking more water will make you visit the loo a lot, feeling like the water just runs through you, but after a while the body starts absorbing the water better. Prepare at least three 1 litre bottles and have them handy to drink through the day. It is amazing how often we suddenly realise it is lunchtime and we have not really had anything to drink! When you would normally have tea, coffee or a glass of wine – substitute it with a glass of water. It just takes a few weeks of proper hydration to feel more energetic and vital. If nothing else our body uses up 2.5 litres of alkaline water a day to maintain the alkaline design – to keep us alive – so it is a good idea to at least replace that.
Back to basics – what we drink, eat, think and feel makes the difference. As we sweat our way trough the summer – make it a healthy hydrating one.
