Eco rastro at Casa Pepe Bravo

Another glorious November morning welcomed the start of a new market in Alozaina’s famous ‘Casa de Pepe Bravo’, a project that has been running for many years helping disadvantaged children and was relaunched after Pepe passed away by his daughter. As well as continuing the work with disadvantaged children and people with drug problems as the ‘Casa de Acogida’ the enormous venue now also hosts many other projects including a ceramics workshop and shop, a restaurant, workshop space as well as the recently ‘crowd funded’ solar dehydrator that processes up to 100kg of produce a day into dried fruit.

The market, which started in another venue will run every other Friday in the grounds of the house and is open to all from 11am to 5pm. Home made, artesan products from the local area are on sale including fresh produce as well as the range of dried fruits from the dehydrator. One stall holder from Yunquera has been getting creative and using walnut shells as packaging for her lip balms (see photos below) and making oil dispensors from bamboo and her own olive wood. “Rather than buy plastic containers for the lip balms i looked around to see what i could use and recycle,” explained Mari. “Walnut shells or sea shells make great containers and make them into unique gifts.” Val Ashkenazi, the market organiser sees the regular Friday events as a chance for the many creative people in Alozaina to get together and share ideas and projects. “there is a lot of good energy in the village,” she says. “So it is an opportunity to do somethign together. We’re planning on having workshops and presentations during the day, but a lot of what this is about is bringing people together.”

Alvaro, who built the solar dehydrator, has been a part of the project at Casa Pepe Bravo for many months now and agrees that it provides a perfect venue for this kind of activity – the gardens and swimming pool and cafe next door provide plenty of space for the market to grow and for people to spend the day chatting and shopping.
