This weekend Natura Málaga returns to the Palacio de Congresos de Málaga for its 6º edition of the popular health and sustainable living fair. One of the stall holders, Naturalmente Mediterreneo, offers natural soaps and skin care, and La Chispa caught up with owner Jennifer Young to find out more about their products and philosophy.
What is the philosophy of Naturalmente Mediterraneo?
We produce natural skincare, with a focus on the amazing ingredients right from this area of Spain which is so rich in natural resources, such as organic extra-virgin olive oil, sweet almond oil, organic jojoba oil, lavender and rosemary, oranges & lemons, pomegranates, poppy seeds, aloe vera, Mediterranean sea salt, goat milk, honey, beeswax.
Our 4 core values:
1) Enjoy what we do every day
2) Use only natural ingredients, from this area whenever possible
3) Support the local community and economy
4) Treat the environment well
What made you start this business?
I learned a lot about natural lifestyle growing up with my mother in Canada. Here in Spain, I began looking after aloe vera plants in my spare time and experimenting with the aloe vera gel. Soap making hit me in October 2009 as a complete obsession. I have been creating ever since, first as a hobby, and expanding to other skin care products such as moisturizing creams, scrubs, salves, lip balms, liquid soap with a focus on local, natural ingredients. Every single product is created with a lot of dedication and passion, ensuring the highest quality to our clients.
One of those unforgettable “Eureka moments” that was a real wake up call for me was when my then 10-year-old daughter said to me one day, “Mum, you say I can do whatever job I want to do, study whatever I want and be whatever I want to be but I don’t believe you, because I watch you go to a job that you hate every day.” I realized what a bad example I was being to her, so I was able to get out of the negative situation at my old job, convert my passionate hobby into a business that I can enjoy every day and that doesn’t even feel like work.
In July 2012, I officially launched Naturalmente Mediterraneo, opening our retail shop and studio where I continue to create and make our products.
What is your background before doing this business in Spain?
I have a master’s degree in translation and have done all sorts of different jobs such as Sales Service Management, Bid Management, Legal Assistant, Translation, Language Classes, Interpreting, Home Owner Services, Property & Community Management
How do you see the interest in natural skincare – is it growing?
Yes, without a doubt. There is definitely a trend toward healthier lifestyle and natural, even organic food as well as skincare.
Why do you think people are interested in natural skincare?
I think people are realizing more and more that it is just as important what you put on your body as what you put into your body, and educating themselves about the harmful chemicals in many commercial skincare products. What kinds of products do you make and sell?
At the moment our product range includes soaps, moisturizing salves & creams, lip balms, solid perfumes, liquid soap, facial serum, bath and body oil, and exfoliating scrubs and there are always many more products in development, like deodorant, shave oil, hair products, eye cream.
We’d like to say thank you to our clients on the Costa del Sol! We will be in Malaga the last weekend in May at Natura Malaga http://www.naturamalaga.com/ Stand # Q3. We hope to see you there!
