Most produce arrives from Almería in southern Spain, known as ‘the salad bowl of Europe’, where irrigated, plastic greenhouses cover over 80,000 acres, over 125 sq. miles. Is this a sustainable way to grow our food though?

Fracking: from veto to banning the bans

2014 ended with some victories for antifracking movement around the world that has seen various prohibitions and moratoriums. Meanwhile, the Spanish Government is determined to take the opposite direction. Policy changes at the state level have upheld the decisions of the Constitutional Court to cancel or paralyze the various initiatives to ban fracking at regional levels, leaving us with the contradictory “forbidden to forbid”.

Prohibitions

Last November, California county San Benito and Mendocino called a vote on fracking, and in both cases they approved a ban on … Continue reading

Petition for a natural park at the Guadalhorce estuary

There is one last chance to convert a small piece of natural beauty into a Natural Park that would connect the Costa del Sol with the inland region. Unfortunately the politicians, rather than make the most of the natural resources, seem intent on continuing to turn more land into urban zones. The petition, launched on change.org wants to avoid the destruction of another historic jewel with yet more concrete.

Support sustainable fishing

Did you know that 79% of the UK’s fishing fleet is made up of small-scale, local boats and yet they only get 4% of the UK’s fishing quota?

This means that most of our fish could already be caught sustainably, by low impact local fishers who not only look after our seas but also provide work in our coastal communities. But instead it’s the big industrial boats that are given the lion’s share of the catch.

Fishing quotas – how much fish different boats and fishers are … Continue reading
