Fifth of corals dead: only emission cuts can save the rest

The world has lost 19 percent of its coral reefs, according to the 2008 global update of the world’s reef status. The report, released by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network, shows if current trends in carbon dioxide emissions continue, many of the remaining reefs may be lost over the next 20 to 40 years.

44% of water consumed in Spain is illegal

In Spain there are an estimated half a million unregistered wells, whose waters are used for irrigation, tourist developments and golf courses, at least 44% of water extracted from aquifers every year is done outside the law and is principally used to irrigate crops, water golf courses and supply new urban development, as revealed by the ‘Global Change Report – Spain 2020’s’

450 scientists and representatives of society sign against GMOs

Vandana Shiva, winner of the Alternative Nobel Prize, asked the Spanish Government to abandon its support for Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs): “GM is not the solution to hunger. The future of food must bypass the control of multinationals, which act as dictators of what we eat and grow, and seeds must remain in the hands of the people.”
