The solar de hydrator
Why a solar dehydrator?
Where we live there are many small farms with fruit trees, that while they are productive are not viable to sell the produce fresh and the trees are left without harvesting. Dehydrating the fruit allows these small farms to create a viable way of exploiting their crops. The dehydration process conserves the food while protecting them from the direct rays of the sun and keeping most of the nutrients. This was traditionally done with figs, grapes and apricots, … Continue reading

Cooking with the sun
Although the Government has no intention of promoting clean alternative energy, we do have the individual opportunity of saving energy by cooking with the sun. There are many different models and designs of solar ovens or cookers available on Interne: parabolic, cardboard box, aluminium reflector, and one that use car tyres! Parabolic reflectors cook very quickly at high temperatures but they are large and have to be orientated towards the sun frequently. The ‘sunstove’ is an excellent design as you only need to point it … Continue reading
Solar energy – Finding the net balance
The advantages of using solar energy in a sunny region like Andalucía, the place with the most hours of sunshine in Eurpoe, are indisputable. Some of the renewable energy installations that have the highest yield are thermal hot water, wind and photovoltaic. This article focuses on the latter, adding that taking advantage of this natural, indigenous resource is not just a luxury, it would be an energy-dependent recklessness to ignore it, as a worryingly high percentage (80%) of external energy use also contributes alarmingly to … Continue reading
The solar dehydrator – Preserving fruit sustainably
The solar dehydrator project was born in 2010 as part of the renewable energy work group created by community project Coín in Transition. The group was aware that there is a large amount of mature fruit that was not being collected in the fields and fincas of the rural area round Coín. This was a great waste not only because we are losing food that is at its peak of nutritional value but also a lost economic opportunity to use one of our local resources. … Continue reading

Novateam: Hot Success in an economically cold climate
Hot air into your house directly from the outside wall
Lars Merland, from Denmark, launched a new business which should make many people very happy because the Novateam revolutionary solar panels rid properties of damp and save a fortune on electricity bills. Lars started the business because he was fed up with the damp problem in his own house, how it was affecting his health, damaging the home and costing money. Realising that these are common problems because houses here aren’t built to withstand the damp, … Continue reading

Their new white frameless panels offer considerable savings so that more people can enjoy the benefits of infra red heating.
Humans have the capacity to absorb infrared … Continue reading
